The Makai Modern Hawaiian Blend from Outpost Coffee is no typical Hawaiian blend. Customarily, companies set out to make the most profit possible from the Hawaiian blend label, and so source cheaper grades of Hawaiian beans and blend them with low quality coffees from around the world. The Makai Modern from Outpost Coffee however, uses quality coffee from Kona farms and blends it (to represent a collective terroir) with organic Latin American beans from producers with the same high standards and values. The result is a medium, silky bodied coffee with notes of brown sugar and grapefruit that will change the way you think about Hawaiian blends.
Unlike the traditional colonial system of agriculture where the producer is destined to remain impoverished, Outpost Coffee has created a value chain where the soil, farmers and customers all thrive. With profound product transparency and the insistence to work only with other farmers that support this value chain, Outpost Coffee is elevating the Hawaiian coffee experience, from bean to human being.
Meet the Makers
Outpost Coffee is working to redefine the Hawaiʻi coffee industry by focusing on only premium products and by utilizing sustainable agricultural and business practices. The founder, Ben Fitt, is an expert roaster and award-winner, representing Hawaiʻi in national coffee competitions. Outpost Coffee is a passion project for him and it shows in the small company’s emphasis on quality over quantity.
